The relevance of dissociation in PTSD: subtype, comorbidity, or component?

Free webinar with Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD, & Bethany Brand, PhD, on June 18th 2021, 5:00 - 8:00 pm (CEST)
OPEN WEBINAR FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

The field of chronic trauma and dissociation is in continuous development. With the diagnoses of Complex PTSD in ICD-11 and the dissociative subtype of PTSD in DSM-5, there is need to discuss the role of dissociation in these disorders and their overlap with dissociative disorders. Two special guests, Ruth Lanius MD, PhD, and Bethany Brand PhD will elaborate on these issues during a free webinar co-organised with ESTD.

There is evidence for a link between dissociation and trauma, in particular chronic (childhood) trauma. An increasing body of research point to the importance of dissociation's role in PTSD. In particular, PTSD related to chronic traumatization is associated with high levels of dissociation and major treatment challenges. Consequently, the DSM-5 included a PTSD dissociative subtype (PTSD-dd), i.e., PTSD with persistent and recurring symptoms of depersonalization and derealization. The ICD-11 has included the diagnosis of complex PTSD (C-PTSD), a diagnosis that communicates disturbances in self-organization in addition to core symptoms of PTSD. Like dissociative disorders, PTSD-dd and C-PTSD are associated with higher levels of childhood trauma than simple PTSD, and there is much overlap between these conditions.

This webinar elaborated on dissociation and dissociative processes in relation to these disorders. Dr. Ruth Lanius will talked about the DSM-5 PTSD dissociative subtype and beyond. Dr. Bethany Brand elaborated on the ICD-11 complex PTSD and beyond. An overlap between the different PTSD-diagnoses and dissociative disorders was discussed and their clinical implications.

It is the aim of the European Society of Trauma and Dissociation (ESTD) to assist professionals in developing their diagnostic skills by offering a series of webinars with our special guests. This upcoming event will be held on ZOOM. Participation is open and free-of-charge to all mental health professionals, especially doctors, psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors. Registration is required via E-psyche. A recording of this webinar will be available for all registered ESTD members.

BETHANY BRAND, PhD, is a Psychology Professor at Towson University and she specialises in the assessment and treatment of trauma-related disorders. She has over 30 years of clinical and research experience. Dr. Brand has been honoured with numerous research, teaching and clinical awards and served on several national task forces that developed guidelines for the assessment and treatment of trauma-related disorders. Dr. Brand is the Principal Investigator on a series of international treatment studies of patients with dissociative disorders (TOP DD studies) as well as studies distinguishing dissociative disorders from other conditions including malingering.
